Godly Men – 2
Picking up from part 1. Just wondering if real success has a lot more to do with our hearts than with the size of our wallets, houses or cars? There is another old song by 4Him, called the Measure of a Man. Some of the lines are:
Oh, I say the measure of a man
Is not how tall you stand
How wealthy or intelligent you are
‘Cause I found out the measure of a man
God knows and understand
For He looks inside to the bottom of your heart
And what’s in the heart defines
The measure of a man
Maybe it’s more about being people who are submitted to Jesus first, because our names are written in heaven. There is another story, the version from Matthew tells us something here. Jesus had sent the disciples out across the sea and later came walking to them across the water. Peter told Jesus, if it is you Lord, bid me come to you. He did and Peter walked on the water.
But, when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:30-31 ESV
Maybe that is what Hauerwas meant last week. By letting go a little bit, not trying so hard to be that successful man, maybe we will start to be a little less like Peter when he got out of that boat. Maybe keeping our eyes on Jesus is the alternative we didn’t see at first. Maybe then we can keep that truth in the “bottom of our heart” and see what comes next.
What do you think?
Be blessed and be a blessing.
